William Thumm, November 12th, 1941

On Sunday, October 12, 1941 at 4:12 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 4292 for a fire located in a barn on the grounds of the Pennsylvania State Hospital at Byberry.

While assisting his company in fighting this fire, Hoseman William Thumm of Engine 58 collapsed. He was immediately taken to the hospital infirmary where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The barn covered an area of about 50’ X 150’ and the fire loss amounted to about $25,000.
