William Seveall, December 5th, 1902

On Friday, December 5, 1902 at 11:42 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 219, Water and Pine Streets, for a fire on board the steamer “S.S. Saxon” of the Narragansett Bay Lines, which was tied up at Delaware Avenue and Pine Streets.

The aft part of the steamship filled and sank as it went down. Chief Engineer Baxter, who was on scene, shouted to the firemen to jump. A score of them leaped into the water, but Hoseman William Seveall of Engine 10, who was the last man to climb the ladder from the hold, fell back and went down with the ship. He drowned before aid could reach him.

The next day, divers recovered his body from the murky waters.
