William P. O’Brien, April 13th, 1942
On Monday, April 13, 1942 just before 3:00 PM, Hoseman William P. O’Brien, on duty at Engine 47, was accidentally shot in the chest by Private Andrew R. Dickinson of the United States Army, who was demonstrating guard duty with a riffle.
Hoseman O’Brien was rushed to Graduate Hospital on fire apparatus but was pronounced dead on arrival.
At that time, the United States Army was guarding the Gray’s Ferry Bridge, and a small detachment of soldiers were quartered in the station of Engine Company 47.
