William J. Robinson, January 15th, 1905
On Wednesday, January 11, 1905 at 4:52 AM, an alarm was sounded on Box 654, Kensington Avenue and Cumberland Streets, for a fire in J. Cantelly’s three story brick theater, 2459-71 Kensington Avenue. A second alarm was sounded at 5:53 AM.
Engine 28’s combination wagon was struck by a freight locomotive at the Pennsylvania Railroad at Trenton Avenue and Ann Streets. Hoseman William Robinson, of Engine 28, was injured when he was thrown from the hose cart, run over by the locomotive, severing his left arm and leg.
Hoseman Robinson’s arm and leg were later amputated in the hospital. One horse was also killed in this accident. Hoseman Robinson died of these injuries four days later on January 15, 1905 while at Episcopal Hospital.
The building was also occupied by the J.G. Blaine Council, the Weccacoe Tribe, the C.R. Stanley confectioners, the E.J. Holland retail liquor store, the Textile National Bank, and the S.G.M. Nerlinger Theater. The owner of the building was G.S. Gandy.
