William A. Spiskey, March 16th, 1878
On February 19, 1875, William Spiskey, who was Foreman of Engine 2, was walking in his neighborhood, while off duty. He came upon a dispute between two of his neighbors, Dennis Haley and Cornelius Ochsline. Foreman Spiskey broke up the fight and walked Ochsling home. He then walked back to the scene of the fight where Haley hit him in the head with a paving stone, knocking him unconscious. He was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital.
Foreman Spiskey never recovered from this injury. He lingered until March 16, 1878, when he died of the wound.
Foreman William Spiskey was one of the first firemen of the new, paid Philadelphia Fire Department, which began on March 15, 1871. He left a widow and two children.
