Elmer Clothier, July 20th, 1968

On Saturday, July 20, 1968, Firefighter Elmer Clothier reported for night shift duty at 6:00 PM.

After receiving his assignment for the night, he left the station to move his car. At about 6:10 PM, the other men of Engine 7 realized that Firefighter Clothier had not returned. The men went looking, and discovered Firefighter Clothier slumped over in his car.

The other firefighters started CPR and called the medic unit. He was rushed to Frankford Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The cause of death was determined to be a heart attack, which was brought on by the stress of a two-hour firefighting service in the extreme heat on July 17.
