Edwin Mason , December 21st, 1904

On Monday, December 19, 1904 at 7:54 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 576, 10th and Chestnut Streets, for a fire at the Henry T. Coates Publishing Company, and Loughead and Company’s building at 919-21 Walnut Street.

Hoseman Edwin Mason of Engine 4 was at the 4th floor on the fire escape attempting to open a heavy metal door – when he was engulfed in a heavy concentration of smoke and was overcome.

Assistant Chief Waters picked him up and carried him to a waiting ambulance. He was taken to the Jefferson Hospital where he died on December 21, 1904, just two days later.
