Edward C. Smedley, April 9th, 1977

On Friday, April 8, 1977 at 8:01 PM, Engine 58 responded to a grass fire located at 1327 Wales Place. This service lasted for 22 minutes. At 9:49 PM, Engine 58 then responded to an extensive grass fire located in the rear of 2031 Byberry Road. This fire lasted for one hour and 18 minutes.

Later that night in the early hours of April 9th, at 1:29 AM, Platoon “C” of Engine 58 responded to a Tactical Phone Box (Number 1492), located at Beth Drive and Pine Road. The fire was located in a two-story split-level brick and frame dwelling located at 103 Buckley Drive, occupied by Iwan Hawras. Engine 56 was “first in” on this box. Engine 58 assisted in fighting the fire, located in a rear bedroom on the second floor of the dwelling.

At 1:56 AM, Lieutenant William Price, detailed to Engine 58 from Ladder 31, announced that the company was available for service. While returning to the station, and when in the vicinity of Welsh Road and Laramie Road, Firefighter Edward C. Smedley (a member of Ladder 28 detailed to Engine 58), appeared to suffer from cardiac arrest.

Rescue 6M with Firefighter Mark Bruni and Firefighter Joseph Kampherstein, together with Battalion Chief John Hicks of Battalion 13, responded to that location at 2:05 AM and administered to Firefighter Smedley.

Rescue 6M transported Firefighter Smedley to Holy Redeemer Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Ortega at approximately 2:28 AM.
