Daniel C. McGee, March 11th, 1930
At about 5:35 pm on the rainy night of January 12, 1930, Box 5216 at Meadow and Wolf Streets was struck. Engines 10 and 49, among other units responded. Engine 10 was proceeding south on 3rd Street. Engine 49 was proceeding east of Snyder Ave. At the intersection of 3rd and Snyder the pumpers of both companies collided. Hoseman Paul Rein of Engine 10 and Hoseman Daniel McGee were thrown from the apparatus and severely injured. Hoseman Rein was taken to St. Agnes Hospital, but he died en route. Hoseman McGee was placed in a red car (police car) and was sent to Methodist Hospital.
Hoseman Sam Bees of Engine 3 was on his way to work and heard the crash. He went to the scene to render aid. He got in the red car with Hoseman McGee to render aid en route. Ironically, the red car was involved in an accident at the intersection of 12th and Jackson Streets. Hoseman Bees was severely injured in this accident. His injuries were so severe that he lost his right leg.
Hoseman Daniel McGee lingered for almost two months. On March 11, 1930 he died of his injuries.
This alarm proved to be a False Alarm.
Hoseman Daniel McGee’s wife Catherine was hired as a Matron (station cleaner) on May 6, 1934. She worked at Engine 43 then Engine 53 until her death in October 1937.
