Charles S. Schwartz, December 9th, 1951

On Friday, December 7, 1951 at 5:43 AM, an alarm was sounded on Box 1836, Broad and Catharine Streets for a fire in a five-story occupied building located at 1427-33 Catharine Street. Shortly thereafter, a second alarm was sounded. The building had been formerly occupied by the Goodwill Industries.

While working on this fire, Lieutenant Charles S. Schwartz of Ladder 23 fell about 25 feet from a roof into an areaway. He was taken to the Graduate Hospital where it was found he had suffered a broken back, seven fractured ribs and other injuries.

Lieutenant Schwartz died of these injuries on December 9, 1951
