Charles S. Craven , January 12th, 1898

On Tuesday, January 11, 1898, at 10:58 AM, an alarm was struck on Box 258, Wayne Avenue and Berkely Streets, for a fire in a one-story frame tool house at Wayne Junction.

Engine Co. 2 responded, and while responding, the house cart was struck by a locomotive owned by Pennsylvania and Reading Railroads at the intersection of 11th and Dauphin Streets.

In this tragic accident, Hoseman Charles S. Craven of Engine Company 2 was seriously injured. He died of his injuries the next day on January 12, 1898.

The cause of the fire was listed as “unknown” and the fire loss amounted to $25.
