On Monday, December 1st, 1890, at 3:08 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 952, Dupont & Fleming, in Manayunk for a serious fire in a 9-story stone factory building occupied by the A. Crenshaw Cotton Mill. A second alarm was sounded at 3:16 PM.

While fighting this fire, Foreman Charles Snyder, of Engine Company 16 was killed when he became trapped beneath a falling wall.

The cause of the fire was listed as “friction of machinery” and the fire loss amounted to $87,015.
