Charles C. Merges, March 11th, 1918

On Monday, March 11, 1918 at 4:14 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 791, 31st and Master Streets for a fire in the Penn Grain and Feed Company Warehouse located on 31st Street below Master.

During this fire, a steel girder gave way and buried 3 firemen under a mess of debris and bags of water-soaked grain. Lieutenant Charles G. Merges of Engine 45 was pinned by the girder which fell across his back. By the time the rubble was cleared away, he had died amidst the wreckage.

The fire loss amounted to $25,000.
