Aloysius Boyle, November 10th, 1905

On Friday, November 10, 1905 at 2:57 AM, an alarm was sounded on Box 495, 15th & Chestnut Streets, for a fire in Yahn and McDonnell’s Cigar Store, a four-story brick building located at the northeast corner of 15th & Chestnut Streets. While battling this very smoky fire, Ladderman Aloysius Boyle of Truck “5” was overcome by smoke in the basement, rendered unconscious, and taken to Hahnemann Hospital. He died a short time later.
