Albert Klemmer, April 10th, 1966

On Saturday, April 2, 1966, Fireman Albert Klemmer, Platoon “A” of Engine 59 reported for duty. His assigned duty was wagon driver.

At 6:36 PM, Engine 59 responded to Box 4226, 15th and Westmoreland Streets for a fire located at 3328 N. Sydenham Street. All companies were instructed to “lead-in with 1 ½ water lines.” Firefighter Klemmer assisted his company in stretching various leads of line to the building involved.

In the meantime, Engine 59’s Autocar wagon would not release from pump gear and the shop was notified. Firefighter Klemmer remained on the firegrounds with the wagon and finally returned to the company at approximately 10:00 PM.

At 10:06 PM on the same day, Engine 59 responded to a false alarm on Box 4643, 27th and Willard Streets. At 1:28 AM the next morning, Engine 59 responded to a Local Alarm at the northwest corner of Clarissa and Juniata Streets for an auto fire that was fully involved.

When the members of Engine 59 were taking up, Firefighter Klemmer remarked to Firefighter Keegan that “this was not a good night and I feel worn out.”

Engine 59 returned to the station at about 2:25 AM, and at approximately 3:00 AM Firefighter Keegan informed Captain George Maples that Firefighter Klemmer had passed out when returning from the men’s room.

Rescue 4 was summoned and Firefighter Klemmer was transported to Philadelphia General Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
