James Forsythe, October 16th, 1891

On Friday, October 16th, 1891 at 4:34 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 513, 11th and Locust streets for a serious fire located in S.R. Harper’s three-story grocery store at 245 S. 11th Street. While responding to this fire, Driver James Forsythe of Engine Company 11 was thrown from the hose cart on which he was riding and sustained serious injuries.

Driver Forsythe died of his injuries a short time later.

The fire loss amounted to $937 and the cause of the fire was listed as “matches”.
