On Thursday, February 16, 1899 at 9:10 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 393, 13th & Market Streets for a serious fire in John Wanamaker’s Laundry – a 5 story brick building located at 1220-30 Market Street.
Sometime after midnight, on February 17, 1899, Hoseman George Steinle, Hoseman Hugh Duffy, and Hoseman William Chance, all members of Engine 32, were killed when they were struck by falling walls.
At this same fire, Hoseman James J. Shea of Engine Co. 1, took sick with pneumonia. He died of the illness on March 2, 1899.
