Engine 22 was organized on March 15, 1871 in the former quarters of the Hibernia Fire Company on Evalina Street east of 3rd Street.
The original company roster was as follows:
Foreman Frank J. Tibbitt
Engineer George R. Orr
Driver Thomas H. Powers
Fireman Michael Keevan
Hoseman Alfred C. Gohr
Hoseman George W. Fletcher
Hoseman James Dealy
Hoseman John T. Watson
Hoseman George C. Manderfield
Hoseman Frederick J. Wade
Hoseman J.J. Sullivan
Hoseman Thomas J. Melson
Mrs. Lawrence was the company matron.
They were assigned an 1859 Reaney & Neafie first size steamer and a hand-drawn hose carriage. The steamer was purchased from the Hibernians for the tidy sum of $3,500.00.
The station was rented from the Hibernia Fire Company at a cost of $833.33 for 1871.
Engine 22 moved into a new station at 214 Pine Street during 1908. The company would be stationed at this location for forty-two years. In 1950 Engine 22 moved in with Truck 4 at 319 Delancey Street. They would remain here until August 1, 1952 when they were disbanded to re-organize Engine 49. On April 7, 1964 Engine 22 was re-organized at Academy and Comly Roads in a new station with newly organized Ladder 31.

Jack,
My grandfather was at Engine 22 in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. His name was Martin Fitzpatrick, and he died in 1959. I was wondering if you had some helpful advice to where I can find information on him.
Thanks for your comment. The museum is currently closed due to the pandemic, but when we do re-open you might be interested in a service we offer. We can help find information about firefighters who worked for the Philadelphia Fire Department. We will be glad to research the files and find the information you need. You can purchase the research through the museum store. Here’s a link –https://firemanshallstore.com/-Philadelphia-Fire-Department-Research-_c_24.html
I have a picture of my great great grandfather from when he retired in 1900 from Engine 22. He was a member of the original paid fire dept. it’s nice to put a face to a name. If interested in few articles and the picture I located email me.
I have a picture of one of my great great grandfathers in his Hibernia No. 1 uniform. We were trying to date it for better identification since many of the men in the family were involved in the unit. Several of them are included in the booklet published for the anniversary of the unit’s founding. Is this a service you offer?
Rita chrivia I would love to see the pictures you mentioned.
